Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services, hosts the second day of the Bosch ConnectedWorld Internet of Things event in Chicago. Part of an ongoing, collaborative effort to advance the Internet of Things (IoT), the conference continues with a focus on the Industrial Internet, and real-world IoT projects in connected industry, also referred to as Industry 4.0, as well as connected mobility and design.

IoT visionaries outline the state of Industry 4.0

IoT expert and visionary, Jim Heppelmann, CEO of PTC, will discuss the convergence of the physical and digital worlds in a morning keynote. He will specifically explore the emerging trend of augmented reality for manufacturing and servicing smart, connected products, as well as the experiences and opportunities augmented reality is creating for competitive advantage in the IoT.

Heppelmann’s address will be followed by two sessions that take a deeper dive into where Industry 4.0 is today and innovation opportunities for the future. The first is a presentation on creating the connected shop-floor with Industry 4.0 led by Mike Mansuetti, president of Robert Bosch LLC, and Dirk Slama, director of business development for Bosch Software Innovations. The session will feature real-world implementations and best practices as well as live showcases for shop floor transparency, process quality, product variety and flexible automation. The second is a panel discussion on the requirements and trends in advancing Industry 4.0 manufacturing operations. Panelists from KUKA Robotics, PTC and Bosch Software Innovations will discuss innovations used to link the physical and digital world in manufacturing while also sharing trends that are enabling advanced manufacturing capabilities.

Industrial Internet and the supply chain

The Industrial Internet links everything – from the shop floor through the entire supply chain, and during the “Creating Ties throughout the Value Chain” session, featured speaker and chair Dr. Richard Mark Soley, chairman and CEO, Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) along with executives from GE and Bosch will delve into how the continuous drive for innovation within the manufacturing industry has accelerated the need for connected products and operations. Additionally, experts and executives from FedEx, WestRock and Dassault Systems will explore the role of Industry 4.0 in decreasing time-to-market and redefining traditional supply chain models.

“Industrial Internet Consortium members believe that pulling an ecosystem together with the shared purpose of seeking and testing transformational business outcomes in the IoT is a worthwhile endeavor,” said Dr. Soley. “With so many IoT leaders in attendance, Bosch ConnectedWorld represents a great opportunity to continue working toward addressing the challenges facing the Industrial Internet of Things: not just security, privacy and standardization, but data quality, real-time analysis, network performance and many other factors.”

Attendees will also be able to learn about how Bosch IoT technologies can give manufacturers transparency along the entire supply chain with the Transport Data Logger (TDL). By connecting to the shipment of sensitive industrial goods, e.g. industrial machines, and recording relevant measured parameters such as temperature, humidity, tilt, and shock, the TDL makes the delivery process visible and traceable. These measurements are then documented and visualized through an app for smartphones and tablets. Since the limits of each parameter can be individually configured, any parameter that exceeds its limit is traceable, thereby ensuring that the appropriate stage of the supply chain is held accountable.

Design Thinking and UX in IoT

Industrial designers are applying UX design techniques to make IoT devices provide quality data-veracity and not just volume. During the “Harnessing the Power of Design Thinking and UX in IoT” session, Paul Hatch, CEO, TEAMS Design USA, along with speakers from Nissan’s Future Lab and A.T. Kearney will explore how we can change the way we design the products and eco-systems to make the most from the opportunities IoT gives us. Hatch will also moderate a panel of experts including Dan Ward, co-founder and chief creative officer, Detroit Labs and Dan Makoski, chief design officer, Garage Partners who will address the question of IoT’s “Macintosh Moment.”

Makoski, who also founded Google’s Project ARA and was the design lead for the original Microsoft Surface, will follow the panel discussion with a fast-paced, hands-on keynote session on how to break free of what is comfortable in order to create experiences that matter.

Real-world IoT applications on display

Attendees will also have the opportunity to walk through Bosch Rexroth’s Factory Automation Roadshow trailer to see the latest connected industry-ready drive and control technologies. The Roadshow emphasizes practical techniques on the implementation of connected industry today, with conveyors, tightening tools, multi-axis mechatronic systems, and electric drives and controls all integrated on board to show how connected automation can work in the real world.
