The winners were announced at the awards gala dinner held on March 2, 2016, in Santa Clara, Calif., to coincide with the Strategies in Light and The LED Show conferences. The Sapphires are the first awards program in the LED and solid-state lighting (SSL) sectors honoring innovation in enabling-technologies and elegance-of-design in finished lighting products.

Daintree Networks has led the industry in reducing solution cost of advanced networked control and sensing. This includes helping lighting manufacturers eliminate unnecessary material costs through innovations that leverage open standards. The company worked with LG Innotek to create a line of LED lighting drivers with embedded wireless communication capability. Utilizing open source firmware by Daintree Networks, LG Innotek designed and built its new driver line with an integrated small-form factor, pluggable ZigBee module. Integrated wireless drivers eliminate the need for separate wireless adapters and associated wiring. This is highly attractive to luminaire manufacturers looking for a simple and low-cost route to wireless connectivity and control.

The new LG Innotek driver can be used by luminaire manufacturers in LED troffers, linear fixtures, and retrofit kits, which interact seamlessly with Daintree Networks ControlScope networked wireless control solution. The combination is expected to result in significant savings for users, both in up-front installation costs (up to 85 percent) and in energy efficiency following installation. By using open standards-based wireless lighting, facility managers now have the foundation for the Enterprise-IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications in their commercial buildings.
