Role of m2m + iot in Making Sustainable Smart Cities in India
Underpinning much of the discourse about ‘smart cities’ is the tremendous growth and innovation in the electronics, IT, IT enabled services and allied sectors over the last two to three decades. And two of the prominent terms associated with the co-evolution of these sectors are m2m and iot. Together the two terms encompass the hardware, software and telecommunication options that can make public services or human activities more efficient. Thereby making them central to the discourse on the aspirations from Smart Cities.
The need for new urbanization and ‘smart’ cities in India – Cities contribute over 60 per cent of the country’s GDP and 80 per cent of tax revenues. The Government of India envisages new urbanization and initiatives such as the 100 smart cities project as a means to unshackle the economy from sub 8 per cent growth.
At present, India has 68 cities with a population greater than 1 million. It is estimated that the demand for essential public services namely Water Supply, Sewage, Solid Waste and Transportation is expected to increase by 4.5 to 8 times the existing demand. Despite this impending surge in demand, 25 per cent of India’s urban population lives in slums. In the cities of Mumbai, Vishakapatnam, Meerut, Vijaywada and Jabalpur this is above 40 per cent. This backdrop coupled with an expanding middle class has fueled enthusiasm for aspirations of efficient, livable and functioning cities represented by the concept of ‘smart cities’.
On the other hand the vision for technology driven cities in a country with extreme poverty and sharp income inequality has raised concerns over equity and fairness. The challenge, therefore, is to leverage technology to ensure efficiency and quality in services while in an inclusive manner.

Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) – A REALITY IN INDIA NOW!
Finally the doors have opened for the most anticipated move from the Department Of Telecommunications (DOT), a Department under the Ministry of Communications, Government Of India, approving the entry of MVNO’s in India.
Early this year DOT have approved the entry of Virtual Network Operators (VNOs) in India under the unified license agreement. With the announcement, DOT received 80 applications for the MVNO licenses that are under evaluation and this has finally led to MVNO services in India.
With DoT’s approval, MVNOs will be able to provide network services to users and can also work as a reseller for the telco companies. They will also be able to do direct billings to its customers. In reality, MVNOs is a REALITY in India NOW!
With this comes the huge business opportunity and potential leading to machine-to-machine (m2m) oriented mobile virtual network operators (MVNO’s) services.The MVNO services providers can also offer and provide m2m platforms consisting of Billing & Revenue Management, Integrated Policy and Charging, Inventory management and Device Authentication catering to number of m2m services over generations of networks such as Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G/LTE etc.
This enables service provider of an end-to-end control, real-time charging and revenue assured m2m businesses. The solution can also provides a unified view of prepaid–postpaid subscribers with single bill for multiple m2m service plans to a new MVNO, or an existing MNO looking for revamping its existing system.
