Electronics Engineering Live!, San Jose, CA, Tuesday, April 1, 2014 — LAVA Computer MFG Inc. today unveiled the LAVA Internet Protocol System (LIPS), a new Internet-of-Things (IoT) connectivity solution, delivering a powerful shortcut for IoT hardware developers. LIPS is the first solution to offer up to 12 simultaneous TCP or UDP connections for simple, low-cost electronic devices, significantly expanding possible IoT functions and capabilities. Now even the smallest of embedded systems, such as single function sensors, can serve web pages, send emails and SMS alerts, transmit data to servers, and communicate with other sensors or systems, at a fraction of the engineering effort and cost of what was previously possible.

“We are on the cusp of a new Internet-of-Things world, but developing IoT devices is still expensive and time-consuming,” said Mark Winnicki, VP Sales at LAVA Computer MFG. “By offloading all the hardest work to a smart network interface and essentially giving that interface the TCP/IP capabilities of a full computer, we can shrink development time from what could be months to literally hours. You can now create imaginative IoT devices about as fast as you can develop any embedded application.”

LIPS can be easily integrated into new or existing designs with a LAVA IP System Engine (LIPE) module, chip, or board. The LIPE hardware manages all the Internet communication for a potential device and is controlled using a dead-simple command protocol, essentially eliminating the requirement for advanced TCP/IP engineering knowledge. The offloading also enables the use of a modest, inexpensive user microprocessor, and the user’s programming language of choice, further reducing development and build costs.

LIPS is intended for devices needing rapid development, multiple network connections, modest sensor and communication requirements, and no limits on the nature of the data being transferred. Potential applications include light switches, data loggers, environment sensors (such as temperature), door monitors, or even the “intelligent” toaster.

About Lava Computer MFG. Inc.

Headquartered in Toronto, ON, Canada, LAVA Computer MFG Inc. designs and manufactures computing interfaces. The LAVA IP System interfaces microprocessors to TCP networks. Other LAVA interfaces include serial and parallel I/O boards and Ethernet-to-serial device servers that are widely used in the Point of Sale, Kiosk, Gaming, Industrial Automation, Security, and Access Control industries. With well over a million LAVA products built into workstations, servers, retail POS systems, and industrial computers since 1984, LAVA I/O interfaces are trusted by resellers, distributors, OEMs, and system builders in over 47 countries worldwide. Designed for lifetime performance, each LAVA connectivity link is tested by hand and covered by the LAVA Lifetime Warranty.
