LogMeIn, Inc. has joined OASIS, an international standards consortium, to help spur development of Internet of Things (IoT) standards. Working alongside tech leaders like Cisco, IBM and Red Hat, LogMeIn is helping to shape a core technology—Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT)—that enables communication between connected devices, platforms and services.

LogMeIn, which uses MQTT in its Xively Cloud Services IoT platform, is a member of the OASIS MQTT Technical Committee and participated in the inaugural MQTT interoperability event hosted by Eclipse Foundation in March, 2014.

“Just as HTTP—the foundation for data communication on the Internet—played a critical role in accelerating the Web’s growth, we believe an open MQTT protocol is key for widespread IoT adoption,” said Sandor Palfy, Chief Technology Officer, LogMeIn. “We’re pleased to be part of the OASIS team charting the IoT’s technology path. Our Xively platform is designed on a foundation of openness, and by helping OASIS bring IoT standards to market, we’re hoping to make it even easier for Xively customers and partners to create compelling connected offerings.”

“The IoT/M2M space is evolving quickly. MQTT is enabling some of the most exciting advances,” said Laurent Liscia, OASIS CEO. “As an MQTT implementer, LogMeIn’s Xively group brings valuable experience to this OASIS work. We applaud LogMeIn’s support for open standards and look forward to their contributions as MQTT development and adoption continues to expand.”

MQTT is a publish / subscribe messaging transport protocol optimized to connect devices with enterprise platforms. It is well-suited for IoT applications, where bandwidth and battery power are at a premium and small code footprints are required.

The Xively IoT platform, built on LogMeIn’s Gravity infrastructure— which supports millions of secure connections between people, devices and data across the globe — is a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) designed to help companies accelerate IoT initiatives. Xively includes a highly-efficient data communications backbone, trust and permissioning engine, and data and directory service, all of which are purpose-built for the IoT. LogMeIn complements this technology platform with Xively Business Services, a team of experienced IoT service professionals who help companies design and develop fully integrated IoT solutions, combining Xively-connected devices with elegant mobile and web apps, and comprehensive CRM/ERP systems.
