Nixu Software today announced it has designed a new breed of DNS architecture together with Nexos AG to manage the demands of next generation networks and device connectivity experienced by Swisscom, Switzerland’s leading Mobile Network Operator (MNO).

Nixu Software is establishing the blueprint for a state-of-the-art Domain Name System (DNS) architecture that combines mobile roaming, machine-to-machine communications and readiness for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). A technical case study that explains how Swisscom is benefiting from this technology is available as a free download.

As the Internet-of-Things (IoT) gains momentum, the chances are that connected devices will roam across networks as mobile devices do today. To facilitate the machine-to-machine communications paradigm, within distributed architectures spanning across multiple Communication Service Providers (CSP), the designed DNS systems allows connected devices to roam freely yet connect to the data aggregators back in the home network.

Additionally, the DNS architecture has been further designed to support deployment as a virtualized network function, meeting the CSPs push towards NFV. In combination these facilitate and deliver flexibility, scalability and reliability to meet demands for IoT, machine-to-machine & NFV.

“With Gartner predicting IoT to have 26 billion Internet-connected physical devices by 2020, it is a near certainty that a lot of the connected devices will roam in the same way as mobile devices do today,” said Juha Holkkola, Managing Director of Nixu Software. “Mobile Network Operators should update their outdated DNS gateways to support the increased transaction volumes associated with machine-to-machine. To further boost the scalability, these gateways should be deployed as virtualized network service clusters to enable rapid expansion of capacity as IoT gains momentum, “ he added.

“Nexos has witnessed firsthand that machine-to-machine communications and Network Function Virtualization are key focus areas for service providers,” commented Thomas Spinnler, Chief Executive Office of Nexos AG. “Given our deep domain knowledge in both mobility and software-based networking solutions, we look forward to tapping into the opportunity that mobility and Network Function Virtualization is presenting us.”
