To expand the depth and breadth of data management within a Apache™ Hadoop® data lake, Teradata Corp., the big data analytics and marketing applications company, today launched Teradata Loom® 2.4. Teradata Loom dramatically increases productivity for data scientists and analysts, because it reduces the time and effort to find and use the data needed for advanced analytics.
“It is common for data lakes to be filled with massive amounts of undefined, ungovernable, and inaccessible data,” said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. “Teradata Loom offers breakthrough capability to maximize the value of the data lake with automated tools that shrink the learning curve, decrease complexity, and speed the generation of exceptional insights to business users. Instead of taking months, big data analytic projects can now advance in hours.”
Teradata Loom now offers comprehensive data lineage, integrated metadata, and data wrangling for Java Script Object Notation (JSON) data, the primary data format for the Internet of Things (IOT), mobile devices, sensors, and web browsers. In addition, Teradata Loom provides faster query performance with the use of partitions to better organize data in Apache™ Hive. Support for International data formats has been added to make it easier to wrangle dates and currency data.
“Data lakes therefore carry substantial risks. The most important is the inability to determine data quality or the lineage of findings by other analysts or users that have found value, previously, in using the same data in the lake. By its definition, a data lake accepts any data, without oversight or governance. Without descriptive metadata and a mechanism to maintain it, the data lake risks turning into a data swamp. And without metadata, every subsequent use of data means analysts start from scratch,” according to a recent Gartner news release, available at the link below.
Without a smart data management tool, organizations struggle to understand the data’s location, the type of data stored, its format, the content, and to how prepare it for analysis. It is nearly impossible to keep pace with frequent updates and the addition of new data requires that analyses be started over from scratch.
Teradata Loom® Community Edition 2.3 is free and can be immediately downloaded from http://bit.ly/1zLe3fz.Teradata Loom® 2.4 will be available by March 31, 2015 at competitive subscription pricing. All editions will be available globally in the English language.
Teradata Loom runs on the following Hadoop platforms: Teradata Open Distribution for Hadoop (TDH 1.3 and TDH 2.0, Hortonworks Data Platform (1.3, HDP 2.1 and HDP 2.2), Cloudera Distribution including Apache Hadoop (CDH 5.1 and CDH 5.2), and MapR Apache Hadoop Distribution (MapR 4.0.2).
